Pixel Art Knowledge - Isometric games don't exist

This guide is a collection of 40 tutorial charts, which can be used on their own, but also work as a collection. They cover mostly basic geometric projection, and explain a lot of types with foundational information and examples.

Since parallel projections with pixel-exact lines get close to no attention in classic literature, this guide...

  • ...describes the full set of pixel-specific projections which only apply to computer graphics
  • ...is meant for digital computer graphics for which different rules apply than for paper and plans.
  • ...this guide follows a color-scheme, so the colors of objects will tell you which group of projection or perspective they belong to.

I want to make this freely available for everyone, as it's really hard to get this  knowledge anywhere else, since it's a total niche subject. If you want to share the materials, please refer to the information in the readme .

Use this for reference, for teaching or for your own art. I hope you'll learn something and have fun with this!

Changelog:

v1.1:
-mistake with "pixel cabinet variant" on chart 24 got fixed.
-mistake with "pixel cabinet variant" on chart 34 got fixed.

v1.2:

-added chart 37 and chart 38 with true isometry examples. Thanks to Matej Jan aka "Retronator" for sharing those games with me.

v1.3:
-fixed problems with viewing angles on chart 33 and 34, as mistakenly axes angles were used instead of the correct viewing angle values.
-exchanged "untileable" with "un-square-tileable" on chart 34, to be easier understandable
-chart 28 arrowheads used a lower resolution than all other arrows, this got fixed as well.

v1.4:
-"4:3 dimetric iso" has been renamed to "4:3 dimetric rot", because after thinking of it longer, naming this one iso would be too easy to again have it pointed out as an isometry. So the rot describes it slightly better (changes on charts 4, 31, 33, 34)
-a typo in the conclusion chart (40) got fixed.

Special thanks to all people who pointed out some little mistakes, have questions and the people who helped editing, especially:
-Thomas Mariacher
-Colin Bellino
-Lynea Flynn

Thanks for this; I was just looking for something about pixel art projection, especially isometric projection, and here it is!

hre it is! Well it's more an overall overview, but I hope it was helpful.

it sure was helpful, its easy to confuse isometric with other very similar projections like military top-down or oblique.

Thanks for providing packs with your knowledge. It's really appreciated! :)

Please. I think things I talk in here should be more widespread :)
Glad you enjoyed it.
